Kerbed alloys are one of those things you stop noticing — until you come to sell the car, or until corrosion creeps under the lacquer and the damage starts to spread. Refurbishing a wheel costs a fraction of replacing it, and on a Porsche or Audi with large-diameter wheels, replacement prices make refurbishment an easy decision. At Brookfield Garage in Stowmarket we refurbish alloy wheels on all makes, restoring kerbed, corroded and flaking wheels to a factory-quality finish.
The damage we put right
- Kerbing and scuffs — the classic scrape along the rim edge from a parallel park gone wrong. Ground out, filled where needed, refinished and lacquered so the repair disappears.
- Corrosion and lacquer peel — Suffolk’s salted winter roads get under damaged lacquer and lift it, leaving white, blistered patches. Left alone it spreads; caught early it refurbishes cleanly. Corrosion around the bead seat can also cause slow punctures — a refurbishment often fixes a mystery deflating tyre.
- Diamond-cut wheels — many modern Porsche and VAG wheels have a machined, two-tone diamond-cut face. These can’t be repaired properly with paint alone: the face must be re-machined on a lathe to restore the bright finish, then lacquered. We’ll identify whether your wheels are diamond-cut or painted and quote for the correct process.
- Colour changes — refurbishment is also the moment to go from silver to anthracite or gloss black, if that’s your taste. Painted finishes can be matched or changed.
Because tyres come off for a proper refurbishment, it’s a sensible time to check tyre condition and ageing too — see our tyres page — and if the kerbing was hard enough, we recommend checking wheel alignment at the same time, since kerb strikes commonly knock tracking out.
Why Brookfield?
- A garage, not just a paint shop. Wheels are removed, refitted and torqued correctly, tyres rebalanced, and pressure sensors handled properly — details that get missed when refurbishment is done in isolation.
- Specialist care. As an independent Porsche specialist we’re used to handling expensive wheels and centre locks with appropriate caution.
- No surprises. Free quote up front; if we find hidden damage such as a buckle or crack once the tyre is off, we’ll ring you before doing anything further — no extra work without your approval.
- Convenient. Free collection and delivery within 2 miles of the garage, and we’re an Approved Garages member.
Alloy wheel FAQs
How long does alloy wheel refurbishment take?
It depends on the finish and the number of wheels — painted repairs are quicker than diamond cutting. We’ll give you a timescale when we quote.
Can a cracked or buckled wheel be refurbished?
Cosmetic refurbishment won’t fix structural damage. Some buckles and cracks can be professionally repaired, others mean replacement — we’ll assess and advise honestly.
How do I know if my wheels are diamond-cut?
Diamond-cut faces have a bright, machined metal finish, often with darker painted spokes behind, and you can usually see fine machining lines. If you’re not sure, send us a photo.
Will refurbished wheels corrode again?
A proper refurbishment with fresh lacquer protects the wheel as well as the factory finish did. Washing off winter road salt regularly helps it last.
