The cambelt (timing belt) keeps your engine’s valves and pistons moving in perfect time. When it snaps — and worn belts do snap, usually without warning — the two meet, and the result is bent valves, damaged pistons and a repair bill that can be worth more than the car. Replacing the belt on schedule costs a small fraction of that. At Brookfield Garage in Stowmarket we replace cambelts on all makes, with deep experience across the VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda engines we work on every day as a VAG specialist.
When is a cambelt due?
Every engine has its own interval — typically somewhere between 4 and 6 years or 40,000 to 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. The time limit matters as much as the mileage: rubber degrades with age, so a low-mileage car on its original ten-year-old belt is still at risk. Intervals also get revised by manufacturers over a model’s life, so the figure in an old handbook isn’t always the current advice.
Not sure when yours is due? We’ll check for free. Give us your registration and we’ll look up the correct current interval for your exact engine, check it against your service history, and tell you honestly whether it’s due now, soon, or years away. No obligation.
What’s included
- Cambelt kit, not just the belt — tensioners and idler pulleys are replaced together, because a new belt on old tensioners is a false economy.
- Water pump where appropriate — on most VAG engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt, and the labour to reach it is the same. Replacing it at the same time avoids paying the full labour cost twice when the pump fails later. We’ll advise whether it makes sense for your engine.
- Auxiliary drive belt check — inspected while everything is apart, replaced only with your approval.
- Correct timing and torque procedures for your specific engine, verified before the car leaves.
- All parts and labour covered by our 1-year parts and repairs warranty.
If your engine uses a timing chain rather than a belt, there’s no fixed replacement interval — but a rattling chain needs diagnostic investigation promptly, and we can help there too.
Why Brookfield?
- VAG and Porsche expertise. We know which engines are interference designs, which intervals have been revised, and which water pumps have known weaknesses.
- Warranty-safe. Cambelt replacement here, done to the manufacturer’s schedule, keeps your warranty intact under block exemption rules.
- No surprises. Fixed quote before we start; no extra work without your approval.
- Convenient. Free collection and delivery within 2 miles, Approved Garages member. A cambelt change usually pairs well with a service — see oil and filters.
Cambelt FAQs
How do I know if my cambelt has ever been changed?
Check the service history for a cambelt invoice or a sticker in the engine bay. If there’s no evidence and the car is past its interval, assume it hasn’t been done — the risk isn’t worth it.
Can you tell if a cambelt is worn by looking at it?
Only partially. Visible cracking or fraying means it’s overdue, but a belt can look fine and still fail. That’s why intervals are based on age and mileage, not appearance.
Why replace the water pump at the same time?
On belt-driven pumps, most of the cost is labour that’s already been paid for during the cambelt job. A pump failure later means doing that labour all over again.
What happens if the cambelt snaps?
On an interference engine — which includes most modern VAG and Porsche units — pistons strike open valves. Expect major engine damage.
