Your brakes are the one system on your car you can’t afford to gamble on. At Brookfield Garage on Watery Lane, Stowmarket, we inspect, repair and replace brakes on all makes and models — with particular expertise in Porsche, VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Bentley thanks to our dealer-level diagnostic equipment. Whether it’s a squeal that’s just started or a warning light that won’t go away, we’ll tell you plainly what’s wrong, what it needs, and what it will cost before any work begins.
Warning signs to watch for
Book a brake check if you notice any of the following:
- Squealing, grinding or scraping when you brake
- A soft, spongy or sinking brake pedal
- The car pulling to one side under braking
- Vibration or judder through the pedal or steering wheel
- The brake, ABS or handbrake warning light staying on
- Longer stopping distances than you’re used to
Some of these are minor; some mean metal is already touching metal. Either way, catching it early almost always means a cheaper repair.
What’s included
- Brake pads and discs — inspected, measured against manufacturer wear limits, and replaced with quality parts covered by our 1-year parts and repairs warranty.
- Brake fluid changes — fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal. Most manufacturers recommend a change every two years; we’ll test yours and change it if it needs it.
- ABS and electronic brake systems — our dealer-level diagnostics read the same fault data a main dealer sees, so we can trace ABS, brake-assist and electronic handbrake faults accurately rather than swapping parts on guesswork.
- Callipers, hoses, drums and handbrake — seized callipers, perished hoses and poorly adjusted handbrakes all found and fixed.
A brake inspection often forms part of a wider service — see our car servicing page — and brake wear frequently shows up alongside worn suspension and steering components, which we can check at the same time.
Why have your brakes done at Brookfield?
- No surprises. We never carry out extra work without your approval. If we find something else while the wheels are off, we ring you first.

- Specialist knowledge. As an independent Porsche specialist and VAG specialist, we handle everything from standard pads to larger performance brake setups.
- Convenient. Free collection and delivery within 2 miles of the garage, and we’re an Approved Garages member, so you’re covered by an independent code of conduct.
Brake repair FAQs
How long do brake pads last?
Typically anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 miles depending on the car and how it’s driven. Town driving wears pads faster than motorway miles. We’ll measure yours and tell you how much life is left.
Do I always need new discs with new pads?
No. Discs are replaced when they’re below the manufacturer’s minimum thickness, warped or corroded. If yours are within limits, we’ll say so.
Why is my brake warning light on?
It could be low fluid, worn pads with wear sensors, or an ABS fault. Our diagnostic equipment will pinpoint the cause rather than guessing.
Can you check my brakes before an MOT?
Yes — a pre-MOT brake check is a sensible way to avoid a failure. Mention it when you book.
