Most modern engines leave the factory with plenty in reserve. Manufacturers map one engine to suit dozens of markets, fuel qualities and insurance brackets, which means the software is deliberately conservative. Remapping rewrites that software to release performance or improve economy — safely, and matched to your car’s actual condition. At Brookfield Garage in Stowmarket we carry out remapping in-house, using maps developed by our tuning partner Avon Tuning, with the car health-checked on our dealer-level diagnostic equipment before any software goes near it.
That last part matters. A remap on an engine with a tired turbo, a clogged filter or hidden fault codes is asking for trouble. We read the car first, fix what needs fixing, and only then flash the map.
What we offer
- Economy remapping — optimises torque delivery and fuelling for real-world economy. Popular on diesel vans and high-mileage cars, where a gentler, more flexible power delivery can noticeably reduce fuel bills.
- Stage 1 — the most popular option. A software-only remap for a car in standard mechanical condition. Typical gains of 20–30% more power and torque on turbocharged engines, with no hardware changes and everyday drivability improved rather than sacrificed.
- Stage 2 — a map calibrated around supporting hardware, usually a performance exhaust and uprated intake. More power than Stage 1, but the hardware needs to be right first — we can advise and fit it.
- Stage 3 — serious builds: uprated turbochargers, intercoolers, injectors and clutch. These are planned as a complete project, not a single visit, and we’ll be straight with you about cost and practicality before you commit.
- TCU (gearbox) remapping — on DSG, PDK and other automatic gearboxes, the gearbox software limits torque and shift behaviour independently of the engine. A TCU remap raises torque limiters, sharpens shifts and can adjust launch behaviour — often the missing half of a remap on a tuned automatic.
Remapping pairs naturally with our other specialist work — many customers combine it with retrofitting or a pre-remap health check via vehicle diagnostics.
Why remap at Brookfield?
- Specialist knowledge. As an independent Porsche specialist and VAG specialist we live with these engines daily — we know which units respond well and which need supporting work first.
- Proven maps, local fitting. Avon Tuning develop the software; we handle the diagnostics, fitting and aftercare here in Stowmarket, so you have one local point of contact. Maps carry a lifetime software warranty.
- Honest advice. If your car won’t benefit, or needs mechanical work first, we’ll say so. No work is carried out without your approval.
- Aftercare. We’re here afterwards, too — Approved Garages member, with free collection and delivery within 2 miles.
Remapping FAQs
Is remapping safe for my engine?
Done properly on a healthy engine, yes — maps stay within sensible tolerances of components. That’s why we insist on a diagnostic health check first.
Will a remap affect my insurance or warranty?
You must declare a remap to your insurer — it’s a modification. A remap can also affect your manufacturer’s powertrain warranty, so on newer cars it’s worth weighing up. We’ll talk you through it honestly.
Can a remap be removed?
Yes. The original software can be restored, for example before selling the car.
Do I need Stage 2 hardware before a Stage 2 map?
Yes — the map is calibrated around the hardware. Running it without is how engines get damaged. Start with Stage 1; most drivers find it more than enough.
