Inside the Brookfield Garage workshop in Stowmarket

Suspension wears so gradually that most drivers never notice it going — until a knock over a pothole, a wallowing ride, or an MOT advisory brings it to light. Yet worn suspension affects everything: stopping distances, tyre life, steering precision and comfort. At Brookfield Garage in Stowmarket we diagnose and repair suspension and steering on all makes, from everyday hatchbacks to air-suspended Porsches and adaptively damped Audis, and we cover wheel alignment on the same page because the two go hand in hand.

Signs something’s wearing out

  • Knocks, clonks or rattles over bumps and potholes
  • The car drifting or pulling to one side
  • Uneven or feathered tyre wear on one edge
  • A wandering, vague or heavy steering feel
  • Excessive bouncing after a bump, or a nose-dive under braking
  • Clicking on full lock (a classic worn CV joint symptom)

Suffolk’s rural roads and potholes are hard on suspension — a knock that appeared after one particular pothole is well worth having looked at before it wears other components.

What’s included

  • Shock absorbers and springs — tested, and replaced in pairs where needed so the car stays balanced. Broken coil springs are a common MOT failure we can catch early.
  • Bushes, ball joints and drop links — the small rubber and steel components that cause most suspension knocks. Replacing a worn bush early is far cheaper than the parts it takes with it later.
  • Steering — track rod ends, steering racks, power steering faults and column issues. Electric power steering faults are traced with our dealer-level diagnostics rather than guesswork.
  • Wheel alignment — checked and adjusted to the manufacturer’s settings. Misalignment after a kerb strike or pothole quietly scrubs the edge off your tyres and ruins fuel economy; correcting it pays for itself in tyre life. It’s the natural finishing step after any suspension or steering repair.
  • Electronically controlled suspension — adaptive dampers and air suspension on Porsche and VAG cars store fault codes we can read and act on, as part of our vehicle diagnostics capability.

Uneven tyre wear is often the first visible symptom — if yours are wearing oddly, have a look at our tyres page and get both checked together.

Suspension and steering FAQs

How do I know if my car needs wheel alignment?
Pulling to one side, a steering wheel that sits off-centre when driving straight, or uneven tyre wear are the usual giveaways. After hitting a serious pothole or kerb, it’s worth checking regardless.

How long do shock absorbers last?
Often 60,000–100,000 miles, but it varies hugely with roads and driving. Because they fade gradually, a check during routine servicing is the reliable way to know.

Is a suspension knock dangerous?
It can be. Some knocks are a loose drop link; others are a failing ball joint, which is a genuine safety issue. Either way, knocks don’t fix themselves — get it inspected.

Will worn suspension fail an MOT?
Yes — broken springs, leaking dampers and excessive play in joints are all failure points. A pre-MOT check here avoids the surprise.
